OX-PICIOUS CHINESE NEW YEAR TREATS FROM UPPERHOUSE BANGSAR

Niu Niu” – whimsical cow-shaped butter chocolate cookies and a most befitting creation – is one of the 9 delectable cookie options available from Upperhouse to herald the upcoming Year of the Ox.

Lightly buttery and bursts of chocolatey bitterness, the crisp butter-chocolate Niu Niu cookies (RM10 for two pieces) should moo-ve up the cheerful spirits for the young and young-at-heart during the festive season.

Made to order using French butter and top-quality ingredients, this year’s festive array from Upperhouse includes Cranberry Crystal Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Checkerboard Cookies, Butter Cookies, Pineapple Tarts, Nasi Lemak Cookies, Rose Pistachio Shortbread, and Lemon Lavender Shortbread.

If there’s one variant you must try from Upperhouse, make it the Nasi Lemak Cookies. The cookies’ melting crumbly texture is lush with the richness of coconut milk; its sweet-savouriness bestowed by the inclusion of fried anchovies and roasted peanuts, punctuated with the occasional whiff of aromatic curry leaves in each mouthful.

Coming in a close second is the winsome Lemon Lavender Shortbread. Kudos to the chef for ensuring the lavender fragrance and nuance remains discernible in the buttery shortbread while allowing the bright lemony accent to shine through.

Crushed rose petals and pistachios speckle the top of each Rose Pistachio Shortbread, making them not only lovely to look at but also surprisingly good to nibble on. The floral and nut combination works like a charm as the muted rose scent becomes more pronounced by the natural nut oil when you eat it.

Chewy dried cranberry bits and sugar crystal stud the Cranberry Crystal Cookies, making these subtly sweet treat the perfect CNY gifts for discerning and health-conscious family and friends.

Loaded with chocolate chips and nuts, the perennial crowd-pleasing Chocolate Chip Cookies is a bankable choice that’s sure to please die-hard chocoholics and avid cookie lovers. A failsafe option should you’re undecided on what to buy.

Each jar is priced at RM25 (large – 220gm) and RM15 (small – 135gm). Advance notice of 3 days is required as the cookies are only made upon order to ensure quality and freshness.

Gift baskets from Upperhouse are also available in a classic hamper or “dim sum” basket. Both are priced at RM188 each and comes with decorative Chinese New Year ornaments. The classic hamper contains 5 large cookie jars with a choice of  flavour selection - you can choose from the 8 available (“Niu Niu” is a separate cookie order).

For the 2-tier “Dim Sum” Basket, it's wrapped with a bow for that auspicious look and feel. It contains 2 large and two small containers of cookies, plus mahjong-shaped chocolates, a jar of chocolate spread, a jar of hazelnut spread, and decorative Chinese New Year ornaments.

To order, customers can PM @upperhousebangsarkl on Facebook or Instagram, or WhatsApp Gerard at 011-2872 0083. For full listing of cookies, please visit: www.facebook.com/upperhousebangsarkl/shop

Now you can dine-in at The Emperor Chinese Restaurant, thanks to the resto’s Table for 2 and Table for 4 – Dorsett Grand Subang’s new norm dining experience.
If you prefer to #dinesafe and #eatwell in the comfort of home, opt for Dorsett Dining: Dim Sum Indulgence and Chill & Cook and range. We highly recommend The Emperor’s Muslim-friendly dim sum which is ready-to-eat after a quick steaming.

Hygienically packed in covered foil trays with simple reheating/cooking instructions, we find the Steamed Siew Mai Emperor Style (RM36 per 8 pcs/pack) utterly delicious when savoured piping hot off the steamer. Dotted with ebikko, the tasty minced chicken and prawn dumplings are second to none.

Whole springy prawns from the Steamed Prawn Dumplings with Coriander (RM36 per 8 pcs/pack) hit the spot with their natural sweetness.

Bao fans will find the fluffy soft Steamed BBQ Chicken Buns (RM26 per 10 pcs/pack) irresistible. Trust me, it’d be hard to eat just one as the pillowy-soft buns are stuffed with flavourful, subtly sweet BBQ chicken filling.
After deep-frying the Deepfried Prawn Rolls with Cheese (RM42 per 1o pcs/pack), the crispy little parcels are simply scrumptious. For added substance, try the classic Yang Zhou Fried Rice with Shrimps and BBQ Chicken (RM 25 per serving for 1-2 persons) from the Wok Home @ The Emperor selection. Hearty and satisfying, you’d polished off every last grain.

The Emperor Chinese Restaurant is open from 12 noon to 10 pm daily for a-la-carte orders and for dim sum from 10 am to 6 pm daily from now until further notice.  For reservation, call 03-5031 6060 extn 1954.

Residents in the Mont Kiara and Sri Hartamas suburbs will be happy to know The Emperor’s Muslim-friendly dim sum will also be available at Dorsett Hartamas from 15th June for dine-in at Table Talk and in-room dining as well as for online order, delivery or self-collection.

More convenient Chill & Cook options from Terazza Brasserie featuring popular Malaysian faves such as Kambing Marsala (RM65 per 500g pack) and Chicken Rendang (RM50 per 500g pack) among others.

Again, the Chill & Cook food packs are prepared by the Dorsett culinary team then kept chilled in sealed packaging. They save you the hassle of slaving in the kitchen as all you need to do is open the packaging and reheat the food.
Our first-hand experience is proof of its convenience and most importantly, the taste is as good as home-cooking with the spices retaining their flavoursome accents.

DELICIOUS FINDS AT DELICIOUS

Guests of the E&O Residences Kuala Lumpur are spoiled for choice when it comes to satisying their culinary expectations. Several restaurants and bars at sited at St. Mary’s Place itself including Delicious, a casual dining haven exuding laidback, breezy vibes.

Daily breakfast for E&O Residences KL guests are catered by the Delicious team but for a better grasp of what the resto can deliver, it’s better to pop in for lunch or dinner.

We did just that during our recent staycation, nabbing the banquette seats set against an Instagram-worthy feature wall. Cafe Manager Siow Kok Leong recommended some of the house thirst-quenchers and Deep-fried Salted Egg Fish Skin (RM17) for openers. Coated in creamy salted egg sauce and tufted with chicken floss, the crunchy bites amped up our anticipation for a Saturyay lunch to remember.
Not sure if it was our valiant attempt at healthy eating or was it the appeal of the dish’s simple, back-to-basics approach but the day's crowd-pleaser was the downhome Roasted Pumpkin Salad (RM25).

We love the pops of tanginess from the boba-like balsamic vinegar ‘caviar’ juxtaposed against the pumpkin’s delicate sweetness; imbuing bright, tantalising flavours to the melange of fresh baby spinach, arugula, toasted pine nuts, feta cubes, croutons and tomato strips.

According to Siow, the Nasi Kerabu with Ayam Percik (RM33) is a firm crowd fave with Delicious' patrons. Tinged blue with the juice of butterfly pea flower, the rice came surrounded by a whole grilled chicken drumstick smothered in a piquantly spicy sauce, a heap of chopped ulam (raw local herbs), fried keropok (crackers), half a salted egg and side dips of sambal belacan and budu (fermented fish sauce).

When the different components are mixed and eaten together, you'd find hot and zippy accents mingling cohesively with savoury and briny nuances amidst soft, crunchy, crispy and tender texures. What’s not to like?

The other sought-after local dish, Mee Goreng Mamak (RM28) also came up to scratch. Relying on its own tried-and-tested formula, Delicious augmented the spiced noodles with chicken, squid, tiger prawns, beancurd, tomatoes and cucur (fried fritters), to ensure hearty satisfaction.

Partial to more Western-oriented fare? We’d recommend Chicken Chop (RM28) – the slab of battered fried chicken fillet with tangy sauce, garden veges and fries got the stamp of approval from the Hainanese in our dining party.

Personally, I’m partial to the simpler, healthier Baked Salmon (RM38). The pared-down approach of pairing citrus and grapefruit segments with grapefruit reduction worked like a charm with the rich taste of the Norwegian salmon fillet.

A familiar fave to bank on is the Classic Cheeseburger (RM35). The scrumptious secret lies in the seared, juicy US Black Angus 80% meat and 20% fat ratio beef patty. Sandwiched between a sesame seed bun with cheddar cheese, sliced tomato, lettuce, onion, pickles and a special house sauce, the burger proved on-point.

Sweet indulgent treats such as Pavlova (RM18), Onde Onde Cake (RM15) and Brownie with Ice Cream (RM18) should please dessert fans. They passed muster although I found the slice of cake underwhelming.
For reservations, call Delicious, tel: 03-2856 6136. Address: G-7 & G-8, Tower A, St Mary’s Place, No.1 Jalan Tengah, Off Jalan Sultan Ismail, KL.
