NOBO MAKES SOY MILK TRENDY AGAIN

Food meets fashion in a launch to mark the arrival of NOBO soy milk in Malaysia, bringing with it a fresh take on one of Asia’s most familiar staples.

Created by the team behind OATSIDE, NOBO sets out to rethink soy milk for a new generation who cares as much about clean labels as it does about taste and texture.

Founder Benedict Lim shared the thinking behind the product: a meticulous search led them to non-GMO, high-protein soybeans sourced from Canada, chosen for both flavour and nutritional quality.

By packing more soybeans into each serving through their double extraction method, NOBO achieves a creamier consistency and higher protein content without relying on gums, emulsifiers, oils or protein powders. The result is a pared back formulation leaning into the soy’s natural richness.

Each pack delivers 4.2g of protein per 100ml — roughly double that of conventional packaged soy milk, and about 40% more than dairy milk— while keeping sugar levels below 5g per 100ml. A flash-cooling technique also helps dial down the often polarising “beany” aftertaste, giving the drink a cleaner, more approachable profile.

Soybeans have long been a cornerstone of Asian diets, prized for their complete amino acid profile, fibre and healthy fats. NOBO’s approach feels like a modern reset; retaining the nutritional integrity of soy while refining its flavour for contemporary palates.

NOBO stands out with a smooth, lightly roasted note and a natural soy creaminess compared to its shelf-stable counterparts. For those looking for a twist, the NOBO Almond Soy blends the same base with finely ground dark-roasted almonds, adding a subtle nuttiness without overpowering the drink.

True to its minimalist ethos, NOBO teamed up with Vietnam-based label CHAUTFIFTH to create a playful, soy bean-shaped handbag — a functional statement piece available in limited quantities online.

Closer to home, NOBO also partners with heritage name Fung Wong Biscuits and contemporary bakehouse Floccus Floccus to reimagine local pastries through a soy-forward lens.

The limited-edition creations will be available until 12 April, offering a taste of how NOBO soy milk can elevate everyday flavours. Some of the outstanding creations include Gem Bites, Mochi, Thousand Layers and Soy Silk Curd.

NOBO soy milk will roll out across major retailers and e-commerce platforms nationwide, in both 180ml and 1L packs, heralding the start of a new chapter for plant-based drinks in the region.

CNY HIGH TEA PARTY WITH DESIGNER CARVEN ONG

A pristine white dress inspired by Karl Lagerfeld stole the limelight at the recent Chinese New Year high tea party hosted by designer Carven Ong.

Modelled by beauty queen Miss Universe Malaysia 2023 Serena Lee, the resplendent creation was exclusively designed by Carven Ong for a client who wore the original to last year’s Met Gala in New York City.

According to Ong’s spokesperson, the white, multi-layered dress was based on the event’s theme of “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. Featuring a distinctive shirt collar on the bodice, the black and white dress also included painstakingly hand-drawn designs of all 180 pieces of Lagerfeld’s fashionable sketches.
As a tribute to Lagerfeld’s fondness for bling bling, Ong had also incorporated lights into the dress, giving it an ethereal glow and a touch of glamour.
Ever the impeccable host, Ong and his team pulled off his CNY high tea party with aplomb; roping in the support of various sponsors and giving his guests ‘ang pow’ redeemable for their fashionable purchases at his boutique.

Ong also unveiled his showcase of Chinese accented apparel to herald the upcoming CNY celebration. Vibrantly coloured materials adorned with intricate embroidery drew the eyes and induced fashion-conscious guests into purchasing his designs for the festive season.

Aside from the plethora of local tea treats, they also sampled freshly brewed coffee by new local brand, byNanas. Guests didn’t leave empty-handed as they were proffered goodie bags in appreciation for their attendance.

MID-AUTUMN FEST WITH TROPICAL ALLURE FROM HILTON KL

Tropical Allure is the theme of Hilton Kuala Lumpur’s Mid-Autumn Festival packaging series this year.
In collaboration with local fashion designer Christy Ng (top pix above), the hotel is touting Ng’s rounded faux leather bags adorned with a hibiscus print – a proud tribute to Malaysia’s national flower in Crimson Red or Royal Purple.

Trimmed with gilded zippers, the statement-making mooncake boxes can be transformed into trendy cross-body bags with the addition of a handbag strap which is sold separately.
Each of the gift box bag can hold 4 pcs of baked mooncakes priced at RM168. The Snow Skin Mooncake Package retails for RM178 (4 pcs per set) while ardent durian lovers may take a shine to the Heavenly Gold Package (RM280), comprising 4 pcs of Musang King snow skin mooncakes.

Fashionistas can also buy the Hilton KL X Christy Ng’s Tropical Allure designer bags at RM148 each. An optional Tropical Allure Handbag Strap is available at RM20 each.

Signature Chynna Rose

At the launch of Tropical Allure, the Chynna Restaurant team demonstrated how
Chynna Rose — Hilton KL’s signature mooncake this year is handcrafted.

Also known colloquially as China rose, the hibiscus takes pride of place in the form of hibiscus jam inside the lavender-hue snow skin mooncake. The floral jam’s subtle tanginess balances the rich creaminess of the mooncake’s filling of ginseng-infused lotus paste studded with almond nibs nicely.

In keeping with tradition, an array of classic baked mooncakes (all halal) with five classic fillings is also available at RM35-38 each. Popular snow skin variants such as Blue Moon (snow skin amaretto lotus paste with blueberry cheese mooncake, RM35 each) and Flower Drum (snow skin lotus paste with soft custard egg yolk, RM35) are also making a comeback.
The entire range of baked and snow skin mooncakes are now sold at the pop-up store in the Hilton KL’s lobby until 13 September 2019. Similar pop-up counters can be found at Pavilion KL (23 Aug-12 Sept), Mid Valley Megamall (22 Aug-13 Sept) and One Utama Shopping Centre (29 Aug-12 Sept).
