From now until 31 December 2023, give to those in need with Dorsett Grand Subang’s Greener Me Charity Tree Project.
The fund-raising initiative features three towering “Christmas trees” built from repurposed wooden pallets, fashioned into multi-level decks holding pots of money plants and festooned with fairy lights.

The plants can either be taken home or replanted later by the hotel upon request when the charity project has concluded.

Each contributor will have their name(s) displayed on the Christmas Charity Tree until 31 December 2023. In addition, contributors stand a chance to win weekly lucky draw prizes such as complimentary hotel stay and dining vouchers from the hotel.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL KL TO HOST TERRY FOX RUN

Calling all runners, joggers and walkers. Lend your support for a good cause by participating in the official Terry Fox Fun Run hosted by Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Participants can register for the Terry Fox Run by buying a Terry Fox Run t-shirt – designed by celebrity Ryan Reynolds – via the Hotel website. The superstar shared a Tweet recently showing him wearing the official Terry Fox Run t-shirt and encouraging people to support the event.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts regional marketing director Nelson Hilton (pix above) said "The Terry Fox Run scheduled on 7 May at 7 am, is in support of Cancer Research Malaysia. A hundred percent of the funds raised will go to Cancer Research Malaysia."
Initiated by the late Terry Fox who lost his leg to bone cancer in 1980, the then 22-year Canadian ran 5,374 kilometres across Canada to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

He continued his Marathon of Hope through rain, snow and heat, until he was forced to stop when cancer appeared in his lungs. Terry passed away the following year, but not before raising CAD 24 million for the cause.

Inspired by Terry’s courage and vision of a cancer-free world, Four Seasons founder Isadore Sharp made a commitment to uphold Terry’s legacy. Working closely with several sponsors to organize the first-ever Terry Fox Run in 1981, the event drew more than 300,000 participants.

Today, more than 9,000 Terry Fox Memorial Runs take place around the world annually, supported by Four Seasons in several locations.

“Our Hotel team is thrilled to host this event for the first time and to honour Terry’s inspiring legacy,” says General Manager Blaise Montandon. “It is a privilege for us to support our local community by raising funds for Cancer Research Malaysia.”

The 5-km route will start from Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, covering the perimeter of KLCC. Safety of the participants are ensured since it is the city’s car-free day. So far the event has attracted about 200 participants especially corporate companies and the Canadian community in KL.

“We invite everyone to join in the Terry Fox Run. You can walk, jog, run or stroll at your own pace. Come with your family and friends: be they young or old to support the good cause.

“Participants also stand a chance to win exciting prizes such as complimentary stays at Four Seasons Hotel Langkawi and Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and dining vouchers from Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur.”

Supporters and do-gooders alike can donate to the good cause by purchasing the said t-shirt too at this link:

CNY GIFT BOXES WITH A HEART FROM SDB

The popular adage ‘Health is wealth’ becomes increasingly significant with the advent of each Chinese New Year (CNY).

When I received the two CNY Gift Boxes from Selangor Dredging Berhad (SDB) to welcome the Year of the Tiger, I found the thoughtfully packed contents: packets of Chinese herbs and soup ingredients, and herbal tea bags for the improvement of general wellness, a welcome change from the usual stash of sweet confectionery and festive treats.

This unique CNY Gift Box is derived from SDB’s One-Two-Boost programme created back in 2020 – a collaboration between SDB and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physicians, to develop a variety of prescribed herbal drinks and soups for healthier lifestyles.

In sync with the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) mission in creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities, CSR participants who comprise young adults – are coached and supervised throughout the packing process of the SDB CNY gift boxes.

Hence when you buy or receive an SDB CNY gift box, every single gift box is a testament of the careful handling, packing skills and coordination put in by this group of special CSR participants. This notable CSR initiative revolves around offering support to those young adults with disabilities while creating opportunities for them to acquire skills, to lead an independent life.

THE LEAGUE OF KITCHENS COOKED UP A STORM AT FRIM

A hundred orphans and stateless children from Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih was treated to a lunch feast, cooked by 40 chefs who participated in The League of Kitchens, Marriott International Asia-Pacific’s 3-day immersive culinary workshop in Kuala Lumpur.

Hosted by Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur, the outdoor cooking session at Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) saw the participating chefs from different Marriott properties in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and The Maldives joining forces with 12 top culinary students from Taylor’s University School of Culinary Arts & Food Studies, Sunway’s Le Cordon Bleu Institute Malaysia, and KDU University College.

Divided into six teams, they prepared Satay, Ulam Kerabu, Butter Chicken, Vegetable Dalcha, Grilled Fish and Squid, Chinese Style Fried Vegetables, Stir-fried Noodles, Steamed Ghee Rice, Malay Kuih, Roti Jala with Durian Porridge, and Sweet Banana Porridge for their coterie of young guests.

According to Toine Hoeksel, Senior Culinary Director of APAC (pix above, left), this year’s League of Kitchens is the 5th edition of the annual Marriott International APAC’s Culinary Workshop. “It’s aimed at providing a high level and immersive experiential training to the participants. The 3-day sessions covered discussions on F&B industry innovations and trends, and fun culinary cook-offs to encourage interactive learning. It's also an avenue to network among fellow chefs and peers in a setting where they can inspire and be inspired.”

In today’s challenging environment where attracting and retaining young talents is paramount, Toine said “With rapid expansion in China and across the globe, Marriott International is constantly seeking to attract new culinary talents into the fold. We work closely with culinary schools and universities by offering internships and industry collaborations. For instance, several local culinary institutions were invited to send their top students to join us for the League of Kitchens. The certificate of recognition they received upon completion of the workshop will serve as good leverage when the students seek employment opportunities with any Marriott property in the future.”

He said a holistic approach is necessary to draw young talents into the hotel industry. "It's challenging to attract new, young talents but it can be done once we can convince them on the long-term career prospects and the roadmap to chart their personal growth and development. We need to be hands-on and fully engaged with them; they need to be nurtured, mentored and guided on their career paths.

“It’s important to constantly listen and communicate with them, to check on their well-being and different aspects of their life. We want to cultivate a long term relationship which makes them aware options are aplenty within the Marriott group; what direction they wish to pursue, where they want to be located or the type of property they want to work in.”

For those already working with Marriott, Toine said initiatives such as The League of Kitchens also enable participating chefs from different countries and properties to take home new insights and experiences, to help them further enhance and elevate guests’ dining experiences. “The workshops touch on traditional cooking techniques, food quality, involvement of local suppliers, wedding trends and the scope of collective growth towards newer and higher standards of service.”

Also doing their bit for the Marriott International’s Spirit To Serve CSR cook-out were Raheel Ahmed, Regional Culinary Director of APAC, Marriott International, Nicolas Kassab, Area Director of Operations, Singapore, Malaysia and Maldives.
