EQ PRESENTS CELESTIAL TREASURES FOR MID-AUTUMN FEST

Rabbit motifs take pride of place on EQ mooncake gift boxes this year. Referencing the Chinese folklore where the rabbit was immortalised by the Emperor of Heaven for its selfless act, the rabbit once again was the icon of choice for EQ's Mid-Autumn Fest gift packaging.

Origami-style rabbit motif hot-stamped in gold played a central role in my
Longevity Collection gift box in vibrant red. Inside, I found 4 traditional baked mooncakes (RM198). Should you prefer snowskin, a set of 6 snowskin mooncakes (RM228) is available too.

Featuring blind-embossed elements of the moon and other decorative motifs, the understated gift box can be repurposed into a keepsake or jewellery box post-celebration.

Headlining the array of baked classic mooncakes is EQ’s Signature Pearl of Harmony. Featuring a combination of black sesame paste, mung bean paste and salted egg yolk, it was meant to resemble a full moon glowing against a night sky. The delicate nutty sweetness of black sesame was balanced by the savoury richness of the salted egg yolk.

We also like the mildly sweet Low Sugar White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk. Equally agreeable was the Pandan Lotus variant with a discernible fragrance of
pandan whilst the perennial Red Bean filling proved on-point.

Visit https://www.eqkualalumpur.equatorial.com/celestial-treasures-mooncakes/ for more details on EQ’s other Mid-Autumn Festival gift boxes and mooncake selection. Otherwise, drop by EQ Kuala Lumpur, Kampachi and IPPUDO restaurants, Pavilion KL Centre Court or Thyme Out CafĂ©, AICB Building to purchase and view the Celestial Treasures available.

ZUAN YUAN TOUTS LOW SUGAR MOONCAKES

Melon seeds embedded within the Snow Skin Mooncake with Red Bean Paste with Melon Seed (RM21.50 per piece) from One World Hotel are evocative of the traditional versions I ate as a child. It’s a nice touch as the seeds are noticeably missing in many of this Mid-Autumn Festival treat lately.

Another recommended snowskin variant is Durian Lotus Paste (RM23 per piece) – the durian aroma is discernible in the lotus paste; its subtle sweetness a perfect balance to complement the astringency of Chinese tea. Other snow skin, low sugar variants available include White Lotus Paste (RM23), Pandan Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM25) and White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM25).

This year, One World Hotel Dim Sum Chef Jordan Chin Chee Hong has decided on 12 varieties of mooncakes to offer for the traditional celebration. Available now until 1st October, Chef Chin said “A good mooncake will not stick to the teeth”. Having travelled to many Asian countries to taste different mooncakes, Chin is adamant Malaysia’s is the best.

He also offers a classic Deep Fried Teo Chew Yam Paste with Single Yolk (RM26 per piece), a tricky to make but scrumptious creation for the occasion. The crisp, swirly pastry is airy-light and generously filled with a savoury-sweet yam paste and salted egg yolk.

The mooncakes come in an Oriental themed gift box with a magnetic flap. Maroon with floral and lantern motifs, it holds four boxes of your choice of baked or snow skin mooncakes snugly.

As for the baked versions, the mooncakes are low sugar to cater to health-conscious market demand. We can vouch for the White Lotus Paste with Double Yolks (RM26) which taste great despite the reduced sweetness. Other enticing flavours in the selection include White Lotus Paste, Red Bean Paste, Pandan Lotus Paste and Supreme Mixed Nuts.

OVER THE MOON FOR MID-AUTUMN AT DORSETT

Red. Green. Blue. These bejewelled hues set the tone for Dorsett’s Mid-Autumn Fest offerings this year.
You don’t need to jump over the moon to get your hands on Ruby Allure — the Red Dragonfruit-infused Crystal Skin Mooncake with Red Bean Paste (RM26 each). I’m a big fan of this healthy fruit so the delicate creation with its light sweetness hits the spot for me.

Durians — you either love it or hate it. I belong to the former camp and again, the
aromatic Golden Treasure — a Pandan-infused Crystal Skin Mooncake with Durian and Black Sesame Paste (RM35 each) comes up to mark. IMHO, I’d prefer a more pronounced durian accent but still, it ticks all the right boxes for me. A baked variation also available debuts this year in the form of Low Sugar Durian Lotus Paste with Single Egg Yolk (RM35 each)

A Dorsett signature, the Sapphire Glitz (RM30 each) makes a comeback by popular demand. Tinged a lovely Tiffany-blue with blue pea flower juice, the crystal skin mooncake with white lotus paste and single yolk is pleasing on the eye and palate.
The quintessential baked mooncake range from Dorsett includes Pure Red Bean Paste (RM26), Pandan Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM30) or Plain (RM27), Six Coarse Grains Paste (RM28) and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste in Plain (RM29), with Single (RM30) or Double Egg Yolk (RM35) variants.
Packed in an exclusively designed double-tiered box with recognisable Dorsett motifs and shades of the group’s corporate blue-brown colours, the Mid-Autumn Festival delicacies are available now until 24 September 2018.
For more information, call Dorsett Grand Subang (tel: 03-5031 6060 ext 3033/3032), Dorsett KL (tel: 03-2716 1000), Dorsett Putrajaya (tel: 03-8892 8388), Silka Maytower KL (tel: 03-2692 9298) and Silka Cheras KL (tel: 03-9100 1133).
