#STAYHOME LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION WITH DORSETT GRAND SUBANG

Crunchy Jellyfish and Fresh Fruits Yee Sang (RM138 nett per full portion for 6-10 persons, RM68 nett per ½ portion for 2-4 persons) from The Emperor Chinese Restaurant, Dorsett Grand Subang is a uplifting way to stir our spirits for a #stayhomestaysafe celebration this Chinese New Year.

The hotel has other variants available: ‘Japanese’ style crispy fish skin with salmon or softshell crab and Korean pear; priced at RM188 nett per portion (6-10 persons) and RM68 nett per ½ portion (2-4 persons) and salmon and Korean pear too.

In view of current SOPs, the CNY Set Menu A or B, a 5-course set meal affordably priced at RM388 nett for 4 – 6 persons is ideal for small families like mine.  Menu A which was delivered to our doorstep by the Dorsett team featured a curtain-raiser of ‘Sichuan’ Hot and Sour Soup.

Laden with strips of Sichuanese preserved vegetable (zhar choi) and chicken meat, the thick soup brimming with hot, sour and savoury accents primed our appetite for the other dishes.

Generous servings of plain white rice served as the plain but perfect canvas to capture the tantalising flavours from the Deep-fried Crispy Fish with ‘Thai’ Mango Salad Sauce. (Note: Only half of the fish is shown here)

Both the fish and sauce came in separate containers so the fish remained crispy when we poured the sauce onto it. Fans of Thai sauces will find this dish greatly appealing; the zingy chilli-mango sauce enticing you to eat extra helpings of rice.

Hearty umami flavour ruled the Wok-fried Sea Prawns with Superior Soya Sauce, subtly sweetened by caramelised onions whilst the Deep-fried Crispy Chicken with Lemon Sauce proved a hit with anyone who enjoy fried stuff.

Kudos to The Emperor team for managing to retain the ‘just nice’ doneness of the Stir-fried Black Fungus with Seasonal Vegetables (we had baby bok choy).

Menu B (available for takeaway only) features Sweet Corn Soup with Minced Chicken, Oil Poached Grouper Fillet with Soya Sauce, Roasted Crispy Chicken with Thai Mango Salad Sauce, Wok-fried Sea Prawns with Crispy Oats and Stir-fried Seasonal Vegetable with Garlic, and Steamed rice.

Should you wish to order takeaway a-la-carte options (enjoy 20% discount), irresistible temptations include Braised Duck with Dried Oyster, Sea Moss and Assorted Dried Seafood (RM230 nett); Wok-fried Sea Prawns with Superior Soya Sauce (RM63 nett per order); Stewed Dried Oysters with Black Mushroom, Black Moss and Beancurd (RM108 nett per order), and Roasted Crispy Chicken (RM140 nett whole bird, RM76 nett ½ bird).

RETRO AMERICAN FAVES ROCK AT ED'S DINER

Opened in 1st Dec last year, Ed’s Diner - Malaysia’s one and only American retro-concept eatery from London - is the first ever to operate outside the United Kingdom since its establishment in 1987. Channelling cool 1950s vibes like the movie Grease, this 158-seat restaurant at Resorts World Genting (RWG) flaunts glowing neon signs, a monochrome, checkered tile floor, glossy vinyl booth seating and chrome-accented soda fountain stools.

A working jukebox – an authentic analog machine loaded with chart-toppers from the 50s, 60s and 70s – takes pride of place. RWG Outlet Manager Mohd Fauzan, Sous Chef Hapizi bin Hussain and Outlet Chef Zulkifli Nayan underwent 2-month training with the master franchisor, to ensure the food and beverage selection comply with expected standards.
Both RWG chefs who have 27 years of industry experience each, not only exceeded the franchisor’s expectations but are also playing a key role in getting halal certification for Ed’s Diner. “Once we succeed, this will be the first halal-certified Ed’s Diner in the world” says Mohd Fauzan.
Food-wise, portions are huge at Ed’s Diner so it’s advisable to share especially if you’re a light eater. Remember to amp up the rock & roll feel by selecting your fave retro hits from the jukebox, absolutely free of charge.
Familiar curtain-raisers of Nachos To Share (RM39) and Chicken Caesar Salad (RM18) paved the way for lunch. The generous heap of tortilla chips came smothered with chicken chilli cheese sauce, tomato salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Each hearty bite was addictive with hints of coriander and chilli seasoning. Mildly sweet yet tart green chilli pickles helped to alleviate the cloying richness.

Loading up on the salad of romaine lettuce, grilled chicken thigh, cherry tomatoes, parmesan, croutons and Caesar dressing made sense; especially when we had to chomp through the plethora of tempting eats.

My personal pick of the lot is Chicken N Waffle (RM24), one of best selling items Ed’s Diner is famous for. The savoury and sweet profile combo of deep-fried chicken with crisp vanilla waffles and honey hit the spot for me.
Smoky slices of streaky beef and Big Ed’s burger sauce lent additional appeal to the double 150g beef patties, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and gherkins which made up the trademark Big Ed’s Burger (RM35). It’s a hefty speciality for one person to handle but if you have a humongous appetite, go for it.
Fancy some heat with your burger? The Nashville Hot (RM19) comprising fried spicy chicken burger with hot sauce and chilli seasoning was piled high with cheese, lettuce, tomato, coriander, cheese sauce, mayonnaise and onion rings. Also available in Super Hot version with double lashings of hot sauce.

Family and child-friendly fare includes Classic Foot Long (beef RM23, chicken RM21) and Love Me Tenders (RM38). Sandwiched between soft, sesame seed-flecked buns, the sausage adorned with gherkins, ketchup, mustard and crispy onion passed muster.
I was more smitten with the delicious fried chicken tenders. A dash of chilli seasoning, a cup of macaroni & cheese, classic fries and onion rings enlivened the boneless chicken, alongside the house BBQ and cayenne ranch (sour cream, cilantro and mayo) sauce. Try the Falafel Burger (RM19) with a patty made from chickpeas and spices for those looking for a vegetarian option.
Specially created for Malaysia, the local team proffers Buko Coconut Pandan Cake (RM28) – a delightful pandan ice cream milkshake crowned with coconut pandan jelly, whipped cream, palm sugar syrup and love letter biscuits. Lightly creamy, its sweetness was agreeable.

Our other fave is the no-frills Peanut Butter Deluxe Shake (RM24) while the signature Strawberry Donut Shake (RM28) with its no-holds barred strawberry ice cream and fresh strawberries concoction could be a meal by itself. Colourful fruit loops, love letter biscuit roll, whipped cream, strawberry sauce and a mini strawberry doughnut complete the liquid dessert.
Ed’s Diner is open from  11am to 10pm Mon-Thurs. On Friday-Sunday and eve of public holidays, it’s open from 11am to 11pm.

CHILLI CRABS FOR BUCKED OUT SEAFOOD AT GOBO CHIT CHAT

To paraphrase a famous fast food chain, it’s finger-lickin’ good. Hot, saucy and meaty Chilli Crabs are the ‘must have’ dish of Gobo Chit Chat’s Bucked Out Seafood promotion.
Although disposable gloves are provided, we reckon a first-hand experience in grappling with the saucy mud is the best way to go. The mud crabs yield a good amount of sweet meat. Deep-fried pieces of mantou buns are served, for dipping into the scrumptious sweet and sour sauce.

Aside from that star dish, the restaurant’s popular seafood feast is a siren’s call seafood-loving crowd in the city couldn’t resist at RM149 nett per person.
Available every Friday and Saturday from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm, Gobo Chit Chat touts its fresh seafood market concept with aplomb.

Stacks of stainless steel buckets are provided for diners to pick and choose from the wide assortment of seafood: live mud crabs, langoustines, baby slipper lobsters, flower crabs, crayfish, razor clams, cherry stone clams, scallops, prawns and mussels.

Hand over your bucket of raw seafood to the chefs and they’ll cook them with your preferred sauce: coriander lime sauce, garlic cheese sauce, sambal sauce, and rendang sauce.

If you like adrenalin-boosting chilli heat, the coriander lime sauce will set your tastebuds ablaze. Our vote goes to the creamy garlic cheese sauce as it amplifies the inherent sweetness of the seafood.

More of King Neptune’s deep-sea treasures are laid out in an international showcase of culinary styles: from Japanese and Thai to European and Scandinavian, to reel in hungry diners.

A riot of colours catches the eye from the impressive array of sashimi, sushi, maki rolls, tempura and Japanese appetisers: jelly fish, marinated seaweed and chuka idako (marinated baby octopus) while freshly made takoyaki (Osaka’s famed dough balls filled with chopped octopus) beckons nearby.
I enjoy tossing my own salads from the multitude of mixed greens, condiments and sauces laid out at the salad bar. Chilled seafood such as poached slipper lobsters, crayfish, scallops and mussels jostle for attention alongside salmon gravlax, cold cuts, smoked white fish and little shot glasses of ready-to-eat appetisers.

The hot main course section will leave you spoiled for choice. Noteworthy specialities to savour include grilled salmon head, seafood paella, a whole fish grilled Thai-style in salt crust, steamed red snapper with garlic, otak otak, seafood spaghetti aglio olio, grilled seabass with salsa, mussels with black beans, roasted beef brisket and breaded jalapeno with cheese among others.

If you manage to find tummy space for dessert, sweet treats such as churros with cinnamon sugar, durian crepes, banana fritters with cheese, assorted cakes and local kuih, and ice cream will leave you on a lovely high.

For every group of five paying diners, the sixth diner can dine for free at Gobo Chit Chat. Reservations are highly recommended to avoid disappointment.

For reservations, call Gobo Chit Chat, tel: 03-2332 9905. Address: Level 5, Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur City Centre.
