Topping our list of choice signature dishes are the pungent but
sedaplicious Ikan Patin Sungai Tempoyak Gurindam from Pahang. Cooked with
fermented durian, coconut milk, local spices and herbs, the tender river fish
curry will entice you to load up on white rice.
Go easy though as there are tempting Nasi Dagang Ulek Mayang and Nasi
Kerabu Watimang Landok from Terengganu too. Load up on the fragrant chopped
herbs and pair with zingy Spicy Sambal Tumis Udang Harimau Dengan Petai Berangkai
from Perak and Clams in Spicy Black Bean Sauce from Sabah for an ultra-satisfying meal.
Lesser known but equally appetising is Ayam Masak Lemak Rebung Joget from
Selangor. Forget about the crispy rendang brouhaha and focus on the lush
richness of Perak’s Rendang Tok with steamed Lemang — a great match that should
score highly with local palates.
Our personal recommendations include Ikan Bakar Wak Safri Si Kuda Kepang
from Johor and Puyuh Goreng, Murtabak Raja from Penang and assorted curries
from the Indian kitchen. The inevitable crowd-puller of Whole Roast Lamb is there too but our meaty serving tastes kinda sinewy so we find it somewhat underwhelming.
Enhancing Vasco’s
urban park feel vibes are live cooking stations, dishing up Asian and
international favorites in addition to its impressive buffet showcase. Island
counters laden with local and international salads, sauces and condiments fight
for your attention amidst a colourful array of tropical fruits, cool thirst-quenchers
and kuih-muih.
Sweet selection to finish with abound, from street food fave of Apam Balik and Pisang Goreng to Apom Johor, Cendol Jelly and Bubur Serawa Durian.
